Musical instruments in State Museum of Applied Arts and History of Handicrafts of Uzbekistan
The museum's collection of traditional musical instruments consists of more than 70 items, which include percussion, winds and strings; only a small part of them is on display.
The exhibited items include folk wind instruments – nai (an ancient side-blown flute), karnai and ghijak.
The last one, also known as the Afghan and Kashgar rubab, is considered the most ancient bowed instrument, which was popular in the Middle Ages as the instrument of lovers.
The instruments displayed in the museum were made by the outstanding masters U. Zufarov, A. Zakirov and A. Abdullayev.
The secrets of the old masters were in the ability to choose a "singing tree", to specify which wood – apple, apricot, elm, walnut or mulberry – would be best for this or that instrument.
