Who are Mutrib, Sazanda and Ghazalkhan?

During the reign of Amir Temur, the art of performing with various instruments was encouraged. At his majlises and feasts, musicians demonstrated the art of playing instruments from different ethnic traditions (Turkic-Mongolian, Chinese, Arab, etc.). There was also an expansion of the types of professional musical activity. Singers were referred to by such terms as mutrib, khananda, guyanda, mughanni, and for instumentalists – navazanda, sazanda, sazzan and others.

Singers who declaimed poetic and prosaic texts were quite popular, and known as kawwal, ghazalkhan or qissakhan. There were also special terms for those who played particular instruments. For example, a barbat player was called barbatnavaz, and players of the Turkic qubuz were called qubuzchi (plural: qubuzchiyan). Military instrument players were known as tablbaz, naqqarachi and other names.
